Rapid Eye Movement and Non-Rapid Eye Movement SleepSelective REM sleep deprivationUsing chronically implanted hippocampal & cortical EEG, as well as neck muscle EMG, we can quickly and accurately identify stages of wakefulness and sleep in real time. To perform a selective REM sleep deprivation, we monitor each animal's sleep-wake activity and gently wake the animal each time they enter REM sleep. This method eliminates more than 95% of REM sleep, without altering percentages of wakefulness or non-REM sleep. This method of REM sleep deprivation minimizes stress, discomfort, general sleep deprivation, and other confounding factors, making it the most accurate way of measuring REM sleep function & homeostasis.
